Dr Rahul Saxena ‘s initial surgical training was at Government Medical College, Nagpur. He spent 15 years there gaining his MBBS and MS degrees followed by specialist experience in Gastro-intestinal and Liver Surgery as an Assistant Professor.
He completed his Senior Fellowship in Liver Transplant & Advanced Hepatobiliary Surgery from Medanta- The Medicity, Gurgaon and was an integral part of the liver transplant team under
Prof (Dr) A S Soin. This team pioneered and performed the first liver transplantation in India and does maximum number of liver transplants in the world.
He was a Visiting Fellow at the Asan Medical Centre, Seoul University, (South korea) in 2014-2015 under the mentorship of Prof. S. G. Lee. This center is among the world’s most renowned for living donor liver transplantation.
He was a Visiting Fellow at the University of Minnesota Medical Center (USA) in 2016. This is among the world’s foremost center doing Deceased donor and Segmental Pancreas Transplantation as well as Autologous Islet Cell Transplantation.
Dr. Rahul Saxena has an extensive experience of more than 1000 Living donor and cadaveric donor liver transplants as well as kidney transplant, small bowel transplant, pancreas transplant and complex hepatobiliary surgeries in both adults & children.
Before coming to Nagpur, he worked as a consultant at one of the largest & busiest liver transplant unit in Western Maharashtra at Sahyadri Speciality Hospital, Pune. He was instrumental in starting the Living donor liver Transplant Programme at Sahyadri Hospital in 2016-17 and this team performed 65 liver transplants (both DDLT and LDLT) in the very first year of its inception.
In June 2017, he gave up the opportunity of a Faculty post at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute, Lucknow and chose to return to central India (Nagpur) to establish a center of excellence in liver transplantation for providing high level expertise & affordable, personalized & comprehensive transplant services to the deserving patients in this part of India.
His mission in life is to make liver transplant affordable & within reach of the common Indian masses.

He is passionate about Liver Transplantation in adults & children & counts complex hepatobiliary surgeries as his primary interest. He has been very active in the critical management of patients with Decompensated End-stage-liver-disease(ESLD) with a multidisciplinary approach.
